I’d recommend that the amateur mastering engineer avoid this part of mastering. Reaper has the built-in JS General Dynamics plugin which works pretty much like the processor from Izotope Ozone, except it doesn’t have any of the automation stuff built in and it isn’t as easy to configure. The difference being that with Exciters, it is easy to configure the wet/dry ratio from the console instead of using the little mix button in the top right corner of the FX window.ĭynamics Processors are subtle things, and if your mix is very good then you won’t notice much from them. They have some value for dance music and such, but for rock I don’t have much need for them since EQ can deliver a more controlled result. I don’t use Exciters, since they are essentially nothing else than treble boosters. Some guys like adding in a Dynamics Processor and others like Exciters. The EQ you adjust here affects ALL instruments, not just one or two. Be careful here, you can ruin a song very quickly at this point. I loaded up ReaEQ, which is Reaper’s built in EQ plugin and made some very small adjustments. I also wanted a bit more shimmer to the cymbals and vocals. On the first track in my example, I felt that the bottom end could use a bit of a boost. Here we can apply a bit of EQ, and if there’s a need for an Exciter, we can apply that also. Okay, now that we have things nice and loud, we want to focus on individual tracks. When this happens, reduce the threshold in LoudMax to a less aggressive number. This is when the sound feels like it goes louder and softer all the time, almost as if a volume knob is getting turned up and down all the time. LoudMax was soft-clipping consistently between 0.5dB to about 4dB, depending on the position in the songs. If we play the songs back now, we should have a uniform volume across all of them, thanks to LoudMax and having adjusted the track volumes. You will notice that the tracks will show how much gain they have all received once done.
